Norwich - A Fine City (2)

A Viking Helmet

Pulls Ferry
Although not far from Bishop Bridge, Pulls Ferry was once one of the ways of crossing the Wensum to reach the city. The lane going towards the Cathedral on the other side used to be a canal which was used to ferry the massive stones and Italian marble to the build the Cathedral. (Note the local flint used to build the gatehouse...)

Lower Goat Lane
Close to the very centre of Norwich are dozens of pretty little streets. One of them, Lower Goat Lane has perhaps led a quieter existence than most, but is nevertheless an extremely popular shopping street. In fact, the best record shop in Norwich is here along with some very trendy and high quality clothes boutiques. It also happens to be where inSiteUK lives.

The Riverside
If you study maps of the old city of Norwich, you'll notice how The River Wensum wends its way from the south east along the eastern side of the old city and meanders round the northern side before swinging in a gooseneck to the north west (though it actually flows the other way). It thus formed a natural boundary before the Romans came to do battle with the Iceni who lived in the area. Since then it became an important lifeline and Angles, Saxons, Vikings and Normans have sailed up the river variously to plunder, trade and settle the area. In fact the very name Norwich comes from the old Angle name Norre Wic, or northern wending, of the river that protected the settlement. Elsewhere, walls and gates had to be built to keep would be marauders at bay. These days though, the invaders are tourists who, in the summer months, choke the river with their rented pleasure craft from Norwich to the Norfolk Broads and Great Yarmouth on the coast.

Elm Hill
Elm Hill is simply one of the most charming streets anywhere. Maybe that's why it's so popular with tourists who love to soak up the olde worlde atmosphere outside one of the pubs. You wouldn't think that Elm Hill with its art galleries, ancient monasteries and picturesque shops is just around the corner from the throbbing centre of Norwich's nightlife in Tombland.
